The Colonel gets a "night box."

In order to make life wonderful for The Colonel and to ensure our suburb does not come knocking at the door of Cluckingham Palace with a slow cooker and a shot gun we have decided to build The Colonel a "night box."

He is such a beautiful and well behaved little man....he is pretty happy to be picked up and cuddled so we knew he would be happy to caught, cuddled and rehoused at night.

We were speaking to our neighbour about possible options for building a night box and within one hour he ended up building one for us. His special needs child insisted that they build The Colonel a box so that he could stay with us.

We asked Ben, his son, to help us to place The Colonel in his new night box. Ben was totally enthralled by the tenderness of The Colonel's feathers, his size and how large he was.

The Colonel was a good boy in allowing us to place him into his night box without any stress or drama. He slept through the night without a sound. We let him out at 8am where he delightfully sexed four of the hens in three minute and then announced his arrival to the neighbourhood.

Day three: The Colonel thinks it is okay to crow in his box at 7am. Maybe we need to add a few inches of straw to the bottom so he can stand but not extend his head. Hmmmm. What a smart bird!

Hmmmm! The Colonel sleeps through until 630am - 7.00am and remains quiet until he hears the girls moving around him. His muffled crow can then be heard from inside the house....no complaints yet and we still have our rooster. I am toying with the idea of relocating his box at night so he does not awake to the sound of the girls clucking around him. Ideally we are wanting to keep him asleep until 8.00am. Surely no one will complain about an 8.00am wake up call.
